My Big Fat Greek Restaurant is located in downtown Tempe in a contemporary, colorful space. Modern Greek tunes keep the experience lively.

Start with a Greek beer or wine – the choices are extensive. There also are drink specials with the Greek liquor of choice, Ouzo.

The menu isn’t quite as huge as one of those Greek tragedies you read in high school, but it’s pretty big. Be assured that all your favorite appetizers, such as hummus (garlicky-yum), dolmas (in a pungent, lemon cream sauce), and spanakopita are some of the best this side of Athens. And the saganaki (flaming cheese) is so good that practically every table during our visit was getting it (of course, it comes with the requisite “Opah!” yell across the restaurant).

Main courses range from gyros and souvlaki to pasta dishes, mousaka, and some unique pizzas. They even have a kids menu for the not so big, not so fat Greeks in your dining party. The gyros meat is tender, flavorful and juicy, and the souvlaki (try the combo for variety) is grilled to perfection.

good to know: In a hurry? Call ahead, pull in to one of the short-term spots out front, and your to-go order will be brought out (sorry, no flaming cheese car-side!). Parking at the nearby garage and Tempe city lot is validated.

what to wear: this is downtown Tempe…whatever. Most patrons are campus or business casual.
